| Developmental biologist, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. After receiving several research fellowships, he joined the Carnegie Institution (1961), and later served concurrently as a professor at Johns Hopkins (1969). He made major contributions to studies of RNA synthesis as a direct indicator of gene activity, the control of genes during development, and the isolation of genes. |
