| Playwright, born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of Thomas MacDonagh. He was orphaned by his father's execution, and the drowning of his mother in an attempt to plant the tricolour on an island in Dublin Bay. He studied at University College, Dublin, became a barrister in 1935, and was made a district justice in 1941. A hunchback, he won success as a writer of the exuberant Happy as Larry (1946), and other plays including Step-in-the-Hollow (1957).
