| Footballer and manager, born near Middlesbrough, NE England, UK Footballer of the Year in 1955, he won an FA Cup Medal the following year with Manchester City. In 1961 he was appointed player-manager of Leeds United, and over the next 13 years transformed the struggling club into a powerful force in British football, taking all the major honours. He succeeded Sir Alf Ramsey as England team manager in 1974, but abruptly abandoned the job in 1977 to take up a coaching post in the Middle East. He died of motor neurone disease. |
