| Country singer, songwriter, and actress, born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, USA. Her early success was with Porter Wagoner (1927– ), on television and record; she later took country-based music into the pop mainstream, well-known hits including ‘Jolene’ (1974) and ‘Islands In The Stream’ (1984). She also wrote ‘I Will Always Love You’ (based on her relationship with Wagoner), a huge worldwide hit for Whitney Houston. From 1982 she had success as a film actress, and also began to operate her own theme park, ‘Dollywood’. |
