| biography:
| Novelist and literary critic, born in Eindhoven, S Netherlands, the sister of the writer Geerten Meijsing. She studied Dutch language and literature in Amsterdam and made her debut in 1974 with De hanen en andere verhalen (The Roosters and Other Stories). Her early novels are classified as Revisor prose, denoting the reserved style dictated by the postmodernist impossibility of describing reality; but in later work the detached way she describes her main characters is replaced by a more passionate narrator's perspective. In her collected essays, Hoe verliefd is de toeschouwer (1988, How Much in Love is the Spectator), she expresses her admiration for writers such as Borges, Salinger, and Yourcenar, who have clearly influenced her fiction. |
