| Count of Holland (from 1190). At first he expanded his territory with the help of Emperor Henry VI, but in 1198, after Henry's death, he supported the Guelph Otto IV Wittelsbach against the Hohenstaufen party and was involved in the conflict between Brabant and Gelre, in which he lost all his territory N of the Maas to Brabant and only recovered it as a fief of the Duchy of Brabant. He left his county of Holland to his only daughter Ada, who was unable to prevent her uncle William I taking it over. |
