| Count of Holland (from 1061), the son of Floris I. With his stepfather Robrecht de Fries (Robert the Frisian), Count of Flanders, he fought for his county, based in Vlaardingen in S Holland, against the Bishop of Utrecht, who had been presented with it by the Emperor Henry IV, and Godfrey of Nether Lotharingia. The bishop gained possession of the county, but after the assassination of Godfrey in 1076 Dirk recovered it with his stepfather's help. |
