| Count of Holland (from 1039), the son of Dirk III. He continued his father's policy of expansion in South Holland, bringing him into conflict with the emperor and powerful bishops, as well as Utrecht. At one time he extended his authority along the Maas as far as Heusden, but was forced to give up by Henry III who twice led armies against him and sacked Vlaardingen and Rijnburg. He was defeated and killed near Dordrecht by the bishops of Metz, Liège, and Utrecht. |
