| biography:
| Javanese prince, son of the Sultan of Jogja, whom he supported in his war with the Sultan of Sepu. After he was passed over for the sultanate as the son of a lesser wife, and rejected as guardian of the ten-year-old sultan by Raffles, he returned to his estates and became famous as a holy man and miracle worker. When road-construction disturbed a holy tomb, he raised a revolt against the Dutch, gaining much support, both popular and from the princes, and led what became known as the Java War (1825–30). He was taken prisoner during negotiations by General De Kock, and exiled to Macassar, where he died. |
