| biography:
| Playwright, born in Córdoba, S Spain. Friendly with Leandro Fernández de Moratín, he however preferred the ‘patriotic’ side when Moratín joined the French invaders in 1808. He married the great actress María Ribera, and worked as a prompter, adapter, and translator of works by Alfieri, Kotzebue, Chénier, Voltaire, and others. His own plays are derivative and have been forgotten by producers and public alike: Las literatas, Tello de Negra, La pupila, Blanca de Borbón on the unfaithful wife of Pedro el Cruel, and Camila are some of the titles. His sonnets, fables, villancicos, cantilenas, odes and epistles have been collected in Vol 67 (1875) of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles. |
