| biography:
| Conductor, born in Athens, Greece. He trained in Athens, then held conducting posts in Berlin and Paris before making his US debut with the Boston Symphony in 1936. He conducted the Minneapolis Symphony (1937–49), then became co-conductor of the New York Philharmonic and its principal conductor (1951–7). Known also as a pianist and composer, he was noted for his remarkable technical abilities and for his advocacy of progressive composers. |
