name: Valera, Diego de

pronunciation: [valayra]

sex: male
lived: (1412?–1488)

biography: Historian, courtier, and moralist at the court of Juan II, who was present on the expedition to the kingdom of Granada in 1431 and at the Battle of La Higuerela. His best work is the Crónica cierta y verdadera de los católicos príncipes el Rey don Fernando e la Reina doña Isabel de esclarecida e gloriosa memoria, usually known as the Crónica de los Reyes Católicos. Mario Penna edited a number of other works by Valera for Vol 16 (1959) of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles: Tratado de las epístolas; Tratado en defenssa de virtuossas mugeres; Espejo de verdadera nobleza; Tratado de las armas; Tratado de providencia contra fortuna; Breviloquio de virtudes; and Doctrinal de príncipes written for Fernando. As a historian, Valera used selections from earlier writers, adding sections (occasionally intrusive) from his personal experiences and from contemporary documents. A declared enemy of Don Álvaro de Luna, he wrote his celebrated Suplicación against him.
