| Spanish conquistador and colonialist, born in Cuéllar, NC Spain. He accompanied Columbus to Hispaniola in 1494, and in 1511 conquered Cuba, of which he became governor (1511–24), and founded Havana. He sent out various expeditions of conquest, including the Mexican expedition of Hernando Cortés in 1519. |
