| biography:
| Golfer and athlete, born in Port Arthur, Texas, USA. A great all-round athlete, she was in the All-American basketball team (1930–2), then turned to athletics and won two gold medals at the 1932 Olympics; she also broke the world record in the high jump, but was disqualified for using the new Western Roll technique. Excelling also in swimming, tennis, and rifle-shooting, she turned to golf, and won the US National Women's Amateur Championship (1946), then 17 championships including the British Ladies' Amateur Championship (1947). In 1948 she turned professional, and won the US Women's Open three times (1948, 1950, 1954). She married George Zaharias, a noted wrestler. |
