| Dutch artist and writer, born in Utrecht, W Netherlands. The creator of a highly successful series of picture books for young children, he started in the book-trade but gave this up to concentrate on graphic art. His first book was De appel (1953; The Apple, 1966). His books include such characters as Miffy (Nijntje) the rabbit, and the small dog Snuffy (Snuffie). His drawings are characterized by simple shapes in the primary colours outlined in black. |
