biography: British politician, born in London, UK. She studied at Cambridge, and was an administration trainee in the civil service before working for the National Council for Civil Liberties, the Greater London Council, and Lambeth Borough Council. She joined the Labour Party in 1981, and served on the Westminster City Council 1982–6. Elected to parliament as MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington in 1987, she became the first black woman member of the House of Commons.
