| biography:
| Cricketer and sports commentator, born in Milan, N Italy. He studied at Cambridge, became a cricketer in 1958, and captained Sussex (1960–65) and England (1962–5). He scored 4502 runs, including eight Test centuries. He excelled in most sports, notably golf. In 1964 he stood unsuccessfully for parliament as a Conservative against James Callaghan. After retiring from first-class cricket in 1965, he became a freelance journalist (1965–88) and a sports promotion consultant. He was appointed chairman of the Test Selection board in 1989, resigning in 1993 after a series of defeats against Australia. |
