| King of the Lombards. The son of Desiderio and Ansa, he was joint ruler with his father (759). He was defeated by Charlemagne's Franks at Chiusa di Val di Susa (773). When Desiderio was taken prisoner at Pavia, Adelchis took refuge in Verona and, after the demise of the Lombard Kingdom, in Constantinople. In 788 he organized an unsuccessful military expedition to regain his kingdom. He is the protagonist of the eponymous tragedy by Manzoni. |
