| Geographer, born near Rockford, Illinois, USA. He first taught at the University of Chicago (1920–8) before joining the Harvard faculty (1928–56). He contributed much to political geography and historical geography, and in 1929 he introduced the term for which he was long best known, sequent occupance. He also had a keen interest in Africa. |
