| biography:
| Cardiac surgeon, born in Houston, Texas, USA. He studied at Johns Hopkins University, and in 1954 joined the Baylor University College of Medicine, where he was professor of surgery (1962–9). He was also the founder (1962) and chief of the surgical division of the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. With Michael DeBakey and others, he pioneered open-heart surgery as well as the surgical treatment of diseases of the arteries. |
