| Cherokee chief, born near Cleveland, Tennessee, USA. He headed the Cherokee National Commission (1848), and was elected tribal treasurer (1871) and principal chief (1879–87). An advocate of accommodation, he defended the Dawes Act (1887), which called for the elimination of Indian tribal land holdings. |
