| Teacher and collector, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, USA. He graduated from Harvard (1875 BA;1880 MA;1880 PhD), worked under Henry Adams, and taught in the architecture and fine arts department at both Harvard (from 1899) and the Fogg Art Museum (from 1909. He wrote several theoretical books on art, including A Theory of Pure Design (1907). An avid traveller, he collected oriental art, which he donated to both Boston's and Harvard's Fogg Museums. |
