| Television chef and writer, born in Woking, Surrey, SE England, UK. She left school aged 16 years and worked as a hairdresser, travel agent, dishwasher, and waitress before learning to cook in a London restaurant. She was a columnist for the Sunday Mirror magazine (1969) and the Evening Standard (1972–84). In 1973 she published her first cookery book, How to Cheat at Cooking, and her popularity increased with the many highly successful television series that followed. An inspirational cook, her cookbook Delia Smith's Christmas (1990) has sold over five million copies. Later best-selling books include Summer Collection (1993), Winter Collection (1995), and How to Cook (1999). The adjective and noun Delia was included in the 2001 edition of the Collins English Dictionary after publishers found it had passed into everyday use. |
