| Lawyer, communications business executive, and broadcasting executive, born in Arkansas City, Kansas, USA. He took his BA in political science and history at the University of Kansas (1960) and his law degree from Washburn School of Law (1963). That year he was appointed an attorney for the US Department of Justice, and in 1965 he joined an office of the US Equal Opportunity Commission. During 1965–9 he served in Africa with the Peace Corps, and then became a legislative assistant to Walter Fauntroy, US representative from the District of Columbia (1969–73). In 1973 he joined C&P Telephone Co, a Bell Atlantic subsidiary, and rose in responsibilities and rank until he became its president and chief executive officer (1988), one of the highest such positions held by an African-American. In 1993 he left C&P to become head of the Public Broadcasting Corp. He has received many honours for his numerous civic, public service, and cultural activities. |
