| biography:
| Baseball player and broadcaster, born in Lucas, Arkansas, USA. One of baseball's most memorable personalities, he won 30 games and the Most Valuable Player award in 1934 as a (right-handed) pitcher for the world champion St Louis Cardinals. When his career ended (1947), he became a baseball broadcaster and was known for his colourful, if ungrammatical use of the English language. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953. |
