| biography:
| A bastard son of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, born in Arras, N France. He entered the church and was Bishop of Therouanne from 1451 and of Utrecht from 1455. His appointment to Utrecht was due to Kabeljauw and Burgundian influence at Rome, and was opposed by the Hoek-dominated Chapter at Utrecht, whose candidate was Gijsbrecht van Brederode. In the ensuing civil war, David was supported by the power of Burgundy, and established his authority, moving his court to Wijk bij Duurstede, which became a centre of culture and art. He captured the Brederodes in 1470 and forced them to give up their opposition. He expanded his authority over Utrecht by setting up a high court empowered to hear appeals from the town's judges. After the death of Charles the Bold in 1477, the town forced concessions from him, but he regained his authority with the support of Maximilian of Austria. |
