| Footballer, born in Leytonstone, Greater London, UK. A midfield player, he joined Manchester United in 1993, and the England team in 1996. He was a member of the 1998 World Cup team and the Euro 2000 squad, and had won 49caps for England by 2002, becoming captain in several games as the 2002 World Cup approached. His many honours with United include the FA Cup, Premier League Championship, and European Cup in the 1998–9 season, the first British side to achieve this feat. He was voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2001. He married Victoria Adams (‘Posh Spice’) in 1999. |
