| Sociologist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He studied at Harvard, then worked as a clerk, teacher, and assistant district attorney before becoming professor at the University of Chicago (1946–58) and then at Harvard. His most notable work is the co-authored study of the urban middle class, The Lonely Crowd (1950). He has also written extensively on policy for higher education. |
