| Political economist, born in London, UK. He set up in business as a young man, and by 1814 had made a fortune. In 1817 appeared the work on which his reputation chiefly rests, Principles of Political Economy and Taxation. The founder, together with Adam Smith, of British classical economics, he made important contributions to the labour theory of value, the theory of rents, and the theory of comparative advantage, notably in international trade. In 1819 he became an MP, and was influential in the free-trade movement. |
