biography: Political economist, born in London, UK. He set up in business as a young man, and by 1814 had made a fortune. The founder, together with Adam Smith, of British classical economics, he made important contributions to the labour theory of value, the theory of rents, and the theory of comparative advantage, notably in international trade.
