| Cinema mogul, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. He worked for his father in film distribution and promotion, and as a story editor and associate producer at MGM and Paramount. He was appointed vice-president in charge of production at RKO when the studio created such films as King Kong (1933). In 1936 he formed his own company, producing A Star Is Born (1937) and his greatest achievement, the enduring screen adaptation of Gone With the Wind (1939), for which he received an Oscar. Among the stars he created was Jennifer Jones (1919– ), who also appeared in his last co-production, A Farewell to Arms (1957), and to whom he was married from 1949 until his death. |
