| biography:
| Cultural anthropologist, born in New York City, New York, USA. He studied at Cornell (1940) and received a PhD from Harvard (1949). Field trips to Yap Island in the Pacific (1947–8) and among the Mescalero Apache in New Mexico (1955–8) yielded influential studies. He taught at Harvard and Berkeley before becoming professor of anthropology at Chicago (1960). His works include The American Kinship Universe (1975). |
