| biography:
| Dutch general, born in Tiel, C Netherlands. He supported the ‘Patriots’, after their defeat joining the French, and was eventually employed by the Batavian Republic. He had distinguished service in the Napoleonic army against the Anglo-Russian invasion of Holland in 1799, the Prussians in 1806, and in the peninsula, when he was made a Baron of the Empire for gallantry. After Napoleon's abdication, he joined the Dutch army in 1814 and fought with them at Waterloo as lieutenant-general. As governor of Antwerp he defended the city in 1832 against the French army, intervening on behalf of the Belgians, but eventually was taken prisoner by them when Antwerp was forced to surrender. Later he became commandant at Breda. His gallantry gave him the nickname of General Bayonet. |
