| biography:
| Pianist, born in Australia. After many competition successes as a child, in 1966 he obtained a place at the Royal College of Music, London, where he is remembered for his acclaimed performance of Rachmaninov's third piano concerto in 1969. Following a nervous breakdown, he spent the next few years in psychiatric hospitals in England and Australia. Since leaving institutional care in 1975, and especially following his marriage in 1984, he has come to cope with a serious mood disorder which has left him with a rapid and repetitive interactional style of speech, and a distinctive mode of playing which is often accompanied by highly audible vocalization. His life-story was dramatized in the film Shine (1995). His world tour in 1997 received a generally cool reception from music critics, but the concerts were given sell-out support and enthusiasm from the public. |
