| Statistician, born in Centralia, Illinois, USA. A noted African-American educator, and a National Academy of Sciences member (1965), he taught at the Berkeley Department of Statistics (1954), where he chaired the department (1957–61). He was a Rosenwald Fellow at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study (1941–2), president of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1955), and a faculty research lecturer at the University of California (1971), specializing in Markoff chains and sequential analysis. |
