| Athlete and sports administrator, born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. He was Olympic 400 m hurdles champion in 1928, won gold medals at both the 440 yd hurdles and the 4 x 440 yd relay in the first Empire Games in 1930, and was five times Amateur Athletic Association hurdles champion between 1926–31. He was MP for Peterborough (1931–43), then was appointed governor of Bermuda. He was a member of the International Olympic Committee, president of the Amateur Athletic Association, and chairman of the British Olympic Association in 1936. In 1946 he became chairman of the International Amateur Athletic Association, and chairman of the organizing committee of the 1948 Olympic Games. He succeeded his father to become the 6th Marquess of Exeter in 1956. |
