| Quaker scholar, born in Pleasantville, Iowa, USA. He studied at Harvard, then taught philosophy at various institutions, notably at Earlham College (1946–54). He retained his link there as professor-at-large after his appointment in 1954 as chief of religious information at the US Information Agency. His books include The People Called Quakers (1966). |
