| Judge, born in Cecil Co, Maryland, USA. A close friend to Abraham Lincoln, he served as a circuit court judge in Illinois (1848–62) until President Lincoln named him to the US Supreme Court (1862–77). A presidential hopeful in 1872, he stepped down from the court to serve the US Senate (Democrat, Illinois, 1876–83). |
