| British academic. He studied at Edinburgh and Oxford universities, and taught at Edinburgh before moving to the USA as professor of English at Chicago (1939–43) and Cornell (1946–51), then returning to Cambridge (1951–6). He has published numerous works on English literature, including Literature and Society (1938) and Critical Approaches to Literature (1956), as well as several books about Scotland, such as Robert Burns and his World (1971) and Scotland and the Union (1977). Later works include A Weekly Scotsman and Other Poems (1994). |
