| Film director and screenplay writer, born in Toronto, Ontario, SE Canada. He studied at the University of Toronto, and went on to become one of the most prolific and acclaimed exponents of the horror film genre to have emerged in recent years. His work is often stylish and experimental, with plots typically concerning the aftermath of some disastrous biological mishap, as in the highly successful The Dead Zone (1983) and The Fly (1986), which gave him cult status. Other films include Rabid (1977), Scanners (1981), Dead Ringers (1988), the controversial Crash (1996), eXistenZ (1998), and Spider (2002). In 1999 he appeared in the film Last Night. |
