| Landscape painter, born near Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He taught as a drawing-master in Hereford (1814–26), publishing A Treatise on Landscape Painting. In 1839 he turned his attention seriously to oil-painting, and executed about a hundred works in oil, mainly inspired by the scenery of North Wales. His son, David Cox (1809–85), was a noted water-colourist. |
