| biography:
| Historian, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He studied at Cambridge and Oxford universities, and became a fellow of Christ's College, Cambridge (1977). In 1998 he was appointed professor of history at Columbia University, New York, and also became director of the Institute of Historical Research at London University. His books include The Decline and Fall of the British Aristocracy (1990), G M Trevelyan (1992), Class in Britain (1998), and Ornamentalism: how the British saw their Empire (2001). He is also general editor of the Penguin History of Britain. |
