| Painter, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He trained as a lithographer before studying painting in London, and was a founder member of the London Group (1913). In Paris he met avant-garde artists including Modigliani, Derain, and Picasso, and their influence is clear in such large compositions as ‘The Mud Bath’ and ‘In the Hold’ (1913–14), which combine abstract and Vorticist influences. |
