| Conductor, born in Blackpool, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and was founder and musical director of the London Sinfonietta (1967–73). In 1968 he became the youngest ever conductor of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, later joining the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra as principal conductor and artistic adviser (1980–3) and principal guest conductor (1983–6). He was principal guest conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1985–9), and has been musical director and principal conductor with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 1989. |
