| Swimmer, born in Colombo, Sri Lanka. His family returned to Scotland in 1965. He became the first British male swimmer for 68 years to win an Olympic title when he took the gold medal in the 200 m breaststroke in a world record time of 2:15·11 in 1976. His first major championship title was the 200 m breaststroke British Commonwealth Games bronze medal in 1970. Four years later he won gold medals at both the 200 m breaststroke and the 200 m individual medley, and silver at the 100 m breaststroke. He won three World titles in the 200 m, setting his first world record time of 2:19·28, in 1973 and 1975, and 100 m also in 1975. |
