| US senator, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. A lawyer and veteran of World War 1, he was originally appointed and then elected to the US Senate (Republican, Pennsylvania, 1922–35). He wrote the national origins clause in the Reed–Johnson Immigration Act (1924). A conservative, he opposed the New Deal, yet supported Roosevelt's defence policies. |
