| Book collector, born in Ellisburg, New York, USA. A librarian and language professor at Cornell University (1868–83), he inherited a fortune on his wife's death. On retiring he moved to Italy and pursued literary interests abroad, collecting books on Dante, Icelandic culture, and the Rhaeto-Romantic languages, which he donated to Cornell along with a fund of over $500 000. |
