| biography:
| Ecumenical leader and evangelist, born near Jaffna, N Sri Lanka. A fourth-generation Tamil Christian, he became increasingly involved in the developing ecumenical movement. The youngest delegate at the 1938 International Missionary Council Tambaram Conference, he was appointed a president of the World Council of Churches after Uppsala (1968), and at the time of his death was chairman of the East Asian Christian Conference and president of the Methodist Church in Ceylon. He wrote 45 hymns for the EACC Hymnal (1963), and these, along with the posthumous A Testament of Faith (1972), convey the spirit of his many books. |
