| Novelist, born in Ribasar, La Coruña, NW Spain. He studied law and practised journalism, but first achieved recognition after his stories La rebusca y otras desgracias (Barcelona, 1958) and his novel La carpa (1958), with the short stories comprising Los conspiradores (1960) won the National Literature Prize for that year. Subsequent works have shown his ability to transcend the somewhat provincial level of post-war Spanish fiction: La criba (Barcelona, 1961), Toda la semana (Barcelona, !964), Estos son tus hermanos (Mexico City, 1965), La noche más caliente (Barcelona, 1965), and in particular the notable Corte de corteza (1969), which depicts the so-called horrors of modern Western civilization. He was influenced by Pío Baroja. |
