| biography:
| Writer, academic, and librarian, born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. He studied at Harvard, won a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford, and was admitted to the English bar (1937). He became professor of American history at the University of Chicago (1944–69) and director of the National Museum of History and Technology (1969–73). His major works include The Americans trilogy (1958, 1965, 1973) and The Discoverers (1983). |
