| Phonetician, born in London, UK. He was called to the bar in 1907, when he was also appointed lecturer in phonetics at University College London (professor 1921–49). He collaborated with others in compiling Cantonese (1912), Sechuana (1916), and Sinhalese (1919) phonetic readers. He wrote An Outline of English Phonetics (1916), and compiled an English Pronouncing Dictionary (1917, 15th edn 1997). His other works included The Phoneme (1950), and Cardinal Vowels (1956). He was secretary (1928–49) then president (1950–67) of the International Phonetic Association. |
